One of travel related start-up companies in Indonesia,, is optimistic to become the new unicorn this year. Co-founder & Chief Marketing Officer of, Gaery Undarsa, told that technically his company is able to gain the Unicorn status this year with market valuation of above USD 1 billion or equal to IDR 14 trillion.

Gaery believes that government support for start-up companies in Indonesia has been very positive and there is nothing to complain about the current policies. The real challenge for him is that people must make more and more transactions using

Responding to that issue, the Minister of Communication and Information, Rudiantara, is quite certain that the chance of becoming a unicorn is very wide open, especially when considering people’s high mobility nowadays. Even though Indonesia is facing the national event of general election in April this year, it cannot be seen as real disturbance for foreign investment to come in and finance Indonesia’s start-ups.

The government is also aiming at increasing the number of unicorns in Indonesia this year from 4 to 5. However, Rudiantara cannot guarantee because they are operating strictly under normal business transactions.

Rudiantara also added that if the number of unicorn increases, then the government will get help from the foreign exchange income, especially to help in fulfilling basic service budget such as education and health.
